State of N India; area 101,300 sq km/39,102 sq mi; capital Jammu (winter); Srinagar (summer); towns and cities Leh; industries timber, grain, rice, fruit, silk, carpets; Indian-occupied territory); history part of the Mogul Empire from 1586, Jammu came under the control of Gulab Singh 1820. In 1947 Jammu was attacked by Pakistan and chose to become part of the new state of India. Dispute over the area (see Kashmir) caused further hostilities 1971 between India and Pakistan (ended by the Simla agreement 1972). Since then, separatist agitation has developed, complicating the territorial dispute between India and Pakistan.
